I've tried booting from the installation disc, but anytime I choose any drive to boot from, it freezes on that screen. Choosing repair then brings up a screen asking which OS you wish to repair, usually there is only one. There are various things that can go wrong, from using the wrong laptop power supply (delivering the wrong voltate) to a blown fuse in the plug. Turn the computer off and then back on and when it starts up start tapping the F12 key. I have worked on motherboards before that would only boot from the CDROM drive if it was connected to the primary IDE connector. If your hardware is too old and slow for a newer Microsoft, consider using a build of Linux such as Ubuntu or Mint.
